“anthropology inevitably blurs the boundaries between the religious and the secular”

… says Michael Lambek, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Toronto, in his essay “Facing religion, from anthropology” in the new issue of Anthropology of this Century, an online journal that “publishes reviews of recent works in anthropology and related disciplines, as well as occasional feature articles” three times a year.

An video-interview with Professor Lambek can be found at “Interviews with Anthropologists”, a website featuring 15 interviews with prominent anthropologists (Maurice Bloch, Henrietta Moore, Peter van der Veer et al.). The interviews were conducted by Clarinda Still in 2008 for the Digital Anthropology Resources for Teaching (DART) project – an international collaboration between Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

“Southeast Asia in World History”, the latest book by Craig A. Lockard, Ben and Joyce Rosenberg Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, is relatively small – only 272 pages! – compared to the scope of it’s subject – eleven countries from ancient times up to the 21st century! – but according to Akiko Sugiyama also “the most accessible single-volume survey history thus far available”.

Symposium zu 150 Jahren deutsch-thailändische Beziehungen

Samstag/Sonntag, 12. und 13. Mai 2012

Die Abteilung für Sprachen und Kulturen des südostasiatischen Festlandes (Arbeitsbereich Thaiistik) des Asien-Afrika-Instituts der Universität Hamburg, lädt am Samstag und Sonntag, den 12.–13. Mai 2012 wie in den Vorjahren zu einem „Thai-Tag“ ein. Die Organisation geschieht in Zusammenarbeit mit der Hamburger Gesellschaft für Thaiistik e.V. (HGT) und wird u.a. von der Königlich-Thailändischen Botschaft, der Stiftung Universität Hamburg und der Krohn-Stiftung unterstützt.

Der diesjährige Thai-Tag steht im Zeichen des 150. Jahrestags der Aufnahme diplomatischer Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Thailand. Experten aus beiden Ländern erörtern am ersten Tag des wissenschaftlichen Symposiums die deutsch-thailändischen Beziehungen auf den Feldern von Politik und Diplomatie, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, Kultur und Bildung. Am zweiten Tag werden Ergebnisse der an deutschen Universitäten aktuell laufenden geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung zu Thailand vorgestellt. Konferenzsprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch.

Das Programm verknüpft wissenschaftliche Vorträge mit einem kulturellen Programm (Ausstellungen, Filme usw.). Tanz- und Ballettaufführungen des Kulturensembles der Walailak-Universität (Südthailand) am Samstag und das Thai-Schachturnier um den „Cup of the Royal Honorary Consulate General Thailand at Hamburg 2012“ am Sonntag ergänzen das Programm.

Der Thai-Tag wird eröffnet am Samstag, den 12. Mai um 8.30 Uhr vom Vizepräsidenten der Universität Hamburg Herrn Prof. Dr. Holger Fischer. Der Königlich-Thailändische Botschafter (Berlin) und Herrn Wolfgang Krohn, Honorargeneralkonsul des Königreichs Thailand (Hamburg) werden Grussworte entrichten.
